Watching Two Girls Do It Is More Important Than Slavery

More on "Arty" Althouse's dismissive "12 Years" comments:

Hey, Ann, since I'm broke - and writing this from a 200 sq. foot "apartment" without a stove (and you're not) - I have to be financially careful with film:
"When I really thought about how I wanted to spend my time, sitting through boring, badly-filmed, extended lesbian sex scenes featuring over-emotional, privileged white women wasn't the answer."

Ignoring "important" shit - it's our American Heritage!

ADDED - Really, it's mind-blowing:

Ann will not reward the first black-directed film to show how blacks got mired under a vicious system that put her over us - not even with her eyes! - but she wants to elevate one about two women licking each other's crotches.

It doesn't get more disgustingly screwy than that,..

  1. Go explain it all to your filipeno hookers.

    They love you for you.

    Dismissive of the movie maybe.

We've been reading the narrative memoir, written by Solomon Northup himself. I highly recommend it both to men of humanity, like Crack, and to men of cruelty, like Shouting Thomas.

Why watch a fictionalized movie when you can read the primary source documents for yourself? Plus, save the $$s and time you would waste by going to the movie theater and instead make a donation to any of your favorite industrious bloggers of integrity. Like the Macho Response.

  4. I'm going to make a Coexist bumper sticker for books, film, and music.

  5. I think the argument would be that more people would be inclined to see a movie than read a book (it's a sad fact of modern life). Thus the movie would have more cultural impact in this day and age.
That said, the narrative (the snippets I've been able to find and read online) does have additional information that sadly is left out of the book (one of the problems with our movie over books watching, modern society).

Sometimes there are advantages to being too broke to go to the movies. You have the opportunity of time to check out the book.
Although when/if both movies come out on Redbox/Netflix/my local library I'm pretty sure I'll check out 12 Years...because, while the images are a bit much for small children, I don't consider them unpleasant pornograph, lacking in anything other than the ability to shock and titillate -- like gratuitous. lesbian sex scenes (or: why my 10 yo. got to watch Schindler's List and not Brokeback Mountain).
Perhaps this is just a matter of personal taste, whatever one could make of that.
